A useful shopping list begins with the dishes you will actually cook. Buying ingredients only because they appear in many Mexican recipes can leave you with products that do not fit the same meal.

Divide the list by use

  • Base: tortillas or another product specifically called for by the recipe.
  • Filling: prepared beans or the ingredients for your chosen filling.
  • Fresh additions: tomato, onion, avocado, cilantro and lime, as needed.
  • Seasoning: salt, a suitable cooking oil and the exact chile or sauce you intend to use.

This is a starting list for the home-cooking ideas on this blog, not a complete definition of Mexican cuisine. Regional dishes use many other ingredients and processes.

Check the form, not just the name

Dry beans and ready-cooked beans require different preparation. A tortilla ready to warm is different from masa that still needs shaping and cooking. Fresh chiles, dried chiles and bottled sauces are not interchangeable quantities. Read labels and recipe instructions before deciding what to buy.

Connect quantities to the menu

Count how many recipes use the same fresh ingredient and buy for their combined needs. Mark what is already at home, including storage condition and package instructions. Keep a short note of leftovers after the meal. That note helps refine the next purchase more than adding new pantry products without a clear use.
